What is bulky waste?

Bulky waste is any item in your household that cannot be broken down effectively and placed in your ordinary bin.

This can range from large electrical items such as ovens and fridges, to things like demolished bits of wall and timber. If you’d take it to the dump or throw it in a skip- it’s bulky waste. It’s everything including, quite literally, the kitchen sink.

Why is bulky waste an issue?

Other than bulky waste clutter up your home, backyard, shed and mental space it also can take up a lot of space in landfill. Even if you’re responsible and attempt to break it down bit by bit as you dispose of it, the chances are once it reaches landfill, it’s going to take many lifetimes to disappear. That’s if it does at all.

If humans keep consuming and disposing at the rate we are, not only will greenhouse gas emissions continue to soar wreaking havoc on our planet and lifestyles but we will eventually run out of space for all this waste. Some countries are seeing the effects of this already, with lower socio-economic communities unable to get away from rubbish, and instead, living within it.

There’s also the great pacific garbage patch which has grown to the size of a country! The fact that this even exists should astound us, but sadly it doesn’t seem to.

Why not just call for hard rubbish disposal or hire a skip?

While these are great ideas to get rid of your bulky waste, they are generally not sustainable solutions.

Councils will only do free hard rubbish collections in small amounts, often twice a year. Though that is a helpful service for the public, the items collected still often go to landfills. This isn’t to say we’re ungrateful to councils for this work. But we’re not too shy to say we think we can do the job better.

The same is true for skips. With a skip, you’re bound by size which can mean either you’re paying for far too much space or you need several to dispose of your waste. Either way isn’t an ideal solution.

What are Want it Gone going to do about it?

We’re not trying to shame you, and as much as we can try to avoid it, eventually, everyone will need to dispose of some form of bulky waste.

At Want it Gone we aim to dispose of bulky waste as ethically and sustainably as possible. We break things down into as many reusable and recyclable parts as possible. This can be taking out materials such as wood and bricks for reuse or electric parts that could assist in servicing other items.

Also, thanks to our simple online booking services (where you send us photos of your items) we calculate the most efficient way to pack our collection trucks to ensure efficient uses of space. The more efficiently we pack the truck, the fewer trips we have to take. Fewer collection trips mean less petrol and emissions in the environment.
